About

When I was younger I wanted to be a poet. While I was in college I realized that this was impractical, and so I decided to pursue a Ph.D. in medieval English literature.footnote 1

In graduate school I found myself interested in textual criticism, especially in the transmission of texts and their material contexts. Around the same time, I became aware of the work of the Text Encoding Initiative Consortium and other work in the production of digital editions of early texts. I loved teaching and learning with others, but the grind of the rest of the degree got to me. I distracted myself from my scholarly work by playing with technology. And so when I realized that I was unlikely to finish — let alone start — a dissertation, and even if I did, I was unlikely to beat out 300+ other candidates for the frighteningly few tenure-track positions that were out there, I decided a career transition was in order.

I’ve been building things on the web for a while. I started out at some fantastic design agencies in Chicago, and then I found my way to Facebook, Chegg, Transform, and dbt Labs. Throughout I’ve been obsessed with building accessible, usable things and fostering a welcoming, inclusive culture. These days I spend most of my time in a text editor and writing code for Netflix.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me with my family, hiking, climbing, cross-country skiing, baking, and reading. I enjoy soccer a lot, too — Minnesota Aurora (I’m a community owner!), Minnesota United, and Werder Bremen are my teams. I’m also probably too online.
